“Expect Leonardo DiCaprio.” —

Greenpeace Mobilization Lab wrote about a project I worked on using twitter to call upon the State Department to support international ocean sanctuaries.

I was pretty happy with how things went and the blog does a good job at capturing lessons learned. You’ll have to read it to figure out how Leo plays in.

Whooping Crane Destroying the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline.
A couple of years ago I was really inpired by a mural in Seattle, "Spirit Bear Destroying the Tar Sands."  I just love the mythology of local animals fighting back against fossil fuel projects. So I made a two similar mash ups with the same theme and now this.

The whooping crane, which I believe is the most endangered bird in the US, has a migration route that overlaps with the Keystone tar sands pipeline. They nest in the same part of Texas where the tar sands is refined. I’m sure the whooping crane would destroy the pipeline if it could but instead its up to us.
This a Fair Use collage of photos by the spectacular wildlife photagrapher Mike Sloat and game changing activists of the Tar Sands Blockade.
Edit: I added more about my inspiration and the whooping crane’s connection to tar sands.

Stand with Inmates Poisoned by Coal Chemicals

Graphic by Adam Peck via Think Progress.

This is climate injustice.

In January, thousands of gallons of the toxic coal cleaning chemicals contaminated the drinking supply for 300,000 people andhundreds of inmates at the South Central Regional Jail (SCRJ) in Charleston, WV, were deprived of access to enough safe water.

Many inmates suffered from illness and injury from dehydration or chemical exposure. Some even faced violence and legal repercussions for seeking medical help and for asking for clean water to drink. You can hold SCRJ accountable and ensure the basic human rights for inmates if you speak out right now!
